This year's 1000 Miglia broke from tradition and included a longer route of 1,300 miles over 5 days, including Milan for the first time. No one seems to know the reasons as to to change but nonetheless "the most beautiful race in the world" attracted no less than 8 pre-war Aston Martins from far and wide. The Ecurie Bertelli mechanical support team were present; primed and ready to attend to the needs of three of these - two Le Mans and Works race car LM9.
Not that the story begins on the start line of course. The three had all been thoroughly prepared and tested at the Ecurie Bertelli workshops beforehand and were in top-notch mechanical form. Notwithstanding the age of some of the original metal components which often decide they are at end-of-life on events - especially overseas ones - the support team were kept busy during the daytime. On-call and rarely further than 15 minutes away they respond to crews to assist with minor niggles and queries. When the day is done and the drivers are enjoying a hot shower and dinner before bed, the support team don their head torches and set about the end-of-day servicing.
All three Aston driver and navigator crews thoroughly enjoyed the event. Two cars finished but sadly the third had to retire for non-technical reasons.
